Camera Work Gallery Kantstraße 149 10623 Berlin Allemagne
Born in 1942, Albert Watson is for photography a classical figure, whose work surely transcends the boundaries between commissioned pieces and Art. He counts among the most famous fashion and commercial photographers in the world; over 250 cover pages of "Vogue" have already shown his portrait photography and diverse magazines, from "Rolling Stones" to "Times" and "Vibe" regularly publish his photographs. He also ranks as one of today's most complex photographers, working within the different genres of still life, portrait, fashion and landscape photography.
In this large exhibition, Camera Work displays his classical works such as "Monkey with Gun", "Golden Boy" or "Waris" as well as his younger work, from which his series "Hat Blocks" and "Jellyfish Tank" are highlighted. Several works in the exhibition were completed with large format contact prints and provide interesting insights to the development of photography. Watson deals with portraits in different ways--impressive photographs of celebrities such as Mick Jagger with Jaguarmask, the smoking Christy Turlington, Alfred Hitchcock with Goose or Kate Moss can here be quoted. The series "Las Vegas Motel" and "Breaunna", shot in the player's city of Las Vegas, is shown on the top floor of the gallery. For over two years, Watson has been staging the dominatrix "Miss Behaving", publicly known as Breaunna. The series resulted in erotic, partly surreal photographs of atmospheric intensity, which, through the entry of light, radiate a meditative mood.
Renowned museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in Milan, the Kunsthaus in Vienna, the Photo-Museum in Antwerp, the City Art Centre in Edinburgh and now the NRW-Forum in Düsseldorf, have already devoted large exhibitions to Albert Watson.
After his graphic design studies at the "Ducan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design" in Dundee and his film and television studies at the "Royal College of Art" in London, Watson turned to photography. He since then devotes the largest part of his time to the craft. He lives and works in New York.
