From the over fifty-year work of this important New York photographer and cinematographer, a rare intensity and refinement emerge. Kenneth van Sickle (1932 - ) is known for his atmospheric images engendered by the ubiquitous urban bohemia of Paris and New York. The exhibition offers a complete overview of this distinguished master, who studied with George Grosz, came early to photography, worked with Robert Frank, and exhibited with Duane Michaels.
His work is in numerous collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibition is Mr. van Sickle's third individual show in Germany, following his retrospective last year at the Kunstverein, Bad Doberan. Images from diverse periods are juxtaposed here: b&w images of the 1950s, influenced by jazz, are matched with photomontages of the 1970s and recent color photos. So we discover from the currents of time accord arises.
