Documenting the lives of young people has been a focus of Magnum Photos since its founding. One of Magnum’s founders, Robert Capa saw the value in proposing global commissions to the picture magazines of the day for which the agency’s international membership were uniquely placed. The first global essay, “People are People the World Over” spread over 12 issues of the magazine Ladies Home Journal in 1948, was followed by “Generation X” in 1952 documenting the lives of young teenagers in the rapidly changing years following World War II. The fifth Magnum global essay, was “Generation Children” which proved popular with both readers and photographers. A Stern commission, the idea was inspired by the Family of Man exhibition; credited as being the longest running photographic exhibition ever curated.
This exhibition contemporary and vintage prints show children at work, at play and at rest, but also as victims and survivors of the many conflicts and hardships documented by Magnum photographers over the past 60 years.
