As the title suggests, this edition of Foam Magazine is entirely dedicated to work by a selection of very talented young photographers. The decision to publish a special Talent issue was inspired primarily by the annual KLM Paul Huf Award, an international prize for talented photographers aged thirty-five or under, organized by Foam_Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam. This year the jury made an exception by announcing two winners: Mikhael Subotzky (South Africa) and Taryn Simon (USA). In addition to the presentation of their portfolios, the magazine includes an extensive interview with each winner, accompanied by portraits by Guy Tillim and Dana Lixenberg.
Work by Taryn Simon shown in this issue comes from her latest project, An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar, and Mikhael Subotzky presents a selection of his panoramic images made in South African prisons, Die Vier Hoeke, printed here on special foldout pages.
Besides the two winners of the 2007 KLM Paul Huf Award, the editors of Foam Magazine spotlight four more photographers from the total number of contest entries. There are fascinating urban landscapes by Domingo Milella (Italy), a series of nocturnal dreamscapes by Astrid Kruse Jensen (Denmark), the fantastically strange scenarios of Lieko Shiga (Japan) and an intimate series of a young couple by Jiuliang Wang (China).
The regular feature 'On My Mind...' invites Celina Lunsford, José Lebrero Stals, Daido Moriyama, Elisabeth Biondi, Erik Kessels and Antonio Gnocchini to each discuss a picture that has recently captured their attention.
Also in this issue is an overview of recently published photo books and information on exhibitions at Foam_Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam.
