"Familiar" is a fascinating take on civic rebirth. It revisits the artist's hometown in central Orange County, 25 years after his departure, and raises penetrating questions about both the past and the future of America's well-worn suburban cities.
Built in the 50s and 60s, these cities provided a new home and future to a post-war population. While southern Orange County's coastal cities now flourish with affluence, central Orange County continues to struggle. Future prosperity and civic health seem to come primarily from growing ethnic populations, which are reviving and recreating these cities for their communities.
Intrigued by this simultaneous decline and growth of his birthplace, Brad Moore chose to stay away from traditional, documentary-style photography in search of something richer. He photographs select buildings and shrubbery in primarily static, symmetrical compositions, reflecting change, irony and ultimately, evolution.
Through this highly original series of photographs, Mr. Moore illustrates his belief that we see things differently when re-visiting a place we once lived. A past connection “creeps into the subconcious and gives a nostalgic and sentimental edge,” that is otherwise not present when photographing a place that is unfamiliar.
