Raymond Jacobs was a native New Yorker, born in Brooklyn in 1923. He studied photography with Lisette Model and Sid Grossman. Throughout the 1950s, he thoughtfully took New York City and its boroughs as his subject matter, creating a powerful portfolio o f images. Fascinated with jazz clubs and Coney Island, Jacobs combed the city examining architecture, people, and nightlife through his unforgiving, intense lens. Jacobs' work added immeasurably to the postwar period o f New York photography. His work was included in the seminal exhibition "The Family o f Man" curated by Edward Steichen for the Museum o f Modern Art in New York in 1955. Many o f the images in this monograph are shown for the first time, bringing attention to his extraordinary talent and vision. An exhibition o f Raymond Jacobs' photographs titled, Raymond Jacobs Rediscovered was held at the Tremaine Gallery o f the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut in spring 2006.
