2015 NATIONAL ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES COMPETITIONSohoPhotoGallery is pleased to announce the 11th Annual Alternative Processes Competition. The gallery, located in lower Manhattan, is New York City’s longest running co-operative photography gallery. All selected photographs will be exhibited at the gallery from November 4th to November 28th 2015.
WHAT IS ALTERNATIVE PROCESS?
Alternative processes include (but are not limited to): Albumen, Cyanotype, Van Dyke Brown, Platinum/Palladium, Gum Bichromate, Bromoil, Salt Print, Tintype, Ziatype, Daguerreotype, Image Transfers, Liquid Emulsion and Photogravure. Traditional Silver Gelatin Prints, C-Prints and Digital Prints are not eligible, however handmade prints created from digital negatives are welcome.
JUROR
Joni Sternbach is a visiting artist at Cooper Union and a faculty member at both ICP and the Center for Alternative Photography in NYC where she teaches wet plate collodion.
Sternbach uses early photographic processes to create contemporary portraits and environmental landscapes. Her long-term projects involve the pursuit and understanding of the western landscape and the series SurfLand, which captures portraits of surfers in tintype. Sternbach’s second monograph, Surf Site Tin Type was recently published by Damiani Editore.Sternbach’s work is in many museums both in The United States and Europe.
SUBMISION
Digital entries must be uploaded at callforentry.org where you will find instructions for submissions. The competition is open to all photographers age 18 years old or older, who are residents of the United States, excluding members of Soho Photo Gallery.
FEES
5 IMAGES $40 • 6-15 IMAGES $5 each additional image
PRIZES
First prize is a workshop at the Penumbra Foundation, sponsor of this year’s competition. Second and third place prizes will also be awarded as well as two or more honorable mentions. Winning participants will be listed on our website: sohophoto.com.
WINNING PHOTOGRAPHS
Photographs must be suitably prepared for gallery presentation or will not be accepted. Maximum height or width (including frame) of exhibited work cannot exceed 48 inches. Packing and delivery instructions will be emailed to participants. Printing, mounting and framing of each piece must be gallery quality. Work must be wired for hanging.
COMMISSION AND INSURANCE
The Gallery’s commission for the sale of prints is 30%. Although we will make reasonable efforts to protect your work while it is in our possession, we are not legally responsible for it. Consider insuring your work for the time it is in the gallery.
