Noé Sendas (born in Brussels, 1972, lives and works in Berlin & Madrid) began presenting his work in the late nineties. The exploration of loss is a central motif underlying Noé Sendas repertoire. Employing a variety of references, explicit or implicit quotations from artistic, literary, cinematic and musical sources are part of his raw materials. Sendas’ work explores the theoretical and material constructs of the body, the observer’s perception mechanisms and the discursive potential of exhibition methods.
"My work has its roots in drawing, from the use of drawing as a means of establishing a thought in visible form. From this, and through my interest in the cinema, visual arts and literature, I define new spheres in which images are used. These images frequently pre-exist, at other times I capture them myself. In either case they always become images collected by me, at first or second hand. Creating a new authorship, which comes out in the handling of a reworked context, my work never starts from the idea of taking possession of something. We are not dealing with a question of ownership or appropriation but re-use, creating a new split from a crack, which already exists."
Sendas has studied at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, USA; The Royal College of Arts, London; Arco and L'Atelier Livre, Lisbon. He has attended residencies at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin; Casa Velazquez, Madrid; Cité des Arts, Paris; Peggy Guggenheim, Venice; Atelier Real Lisboa & Contretype, Brussels.
He has exhibited regularly since the mid-nineties and his works have been presented in institutions such as Yerba Buena for the Arts, USA; Kunsthalle Bonn, Germany; Akademie der Kunst, Berlin; Le Plateau, Paris as well as many others.
