© Jamie Warren. You Are Not Alone: Self-Portrait as Michael Jackson in a recreation of the Genealogical Trees of the Dominican Order. 2014
Expositions du 25/2/2015 au 7/3/2015 Terminé

Higher Pictures 980 Madison Avenue 10075 New York États-Unis

Higher Pictures presents a limited-run presentation of You Are Not Alone, 2014, a new video and photographic performance by Jaimie Warren. In her latest delirious pastiche, Warren continues to craft canny and campy post-Internet mashups of pop culture, religious iconography, and art history by playing Michael Jackson in a reimagining of a 16th - 17th century Dominican genealogical painting that traces the pious descendants of Saint Dominic. Jackson's family tree is a mixed bag of influences and kindred spirits including the Bee Gees, Peter Pan, llamas Louie and Lola, and a Pinocchio marionette controlled by Supremes-era Diana Ross. Singing, swaying, and violence ensue, Jackson at one point falling victim to a particularly murderous Slash guitar solo. Warren and her cast and crew of artists, volunteers, and youth, assembled at a residency at Helmuth Projects in San Diego, create a uniquely contradictory experience, at once parodic and sincere, demented and wholesome, hysterical and melancholic. This is the artist's second solo exhibition at the gallery.

Jaimie Warren was born in 1980 in Waukesha, Wisconsin and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She is co-creator and co-director of the community-engaged traveling collective Whoop Dee Doo. Recent solo exhibitions of Warren's work have been presented at The Hole in New York, San Francisco Camerawork in California, and the Kennedy Museum in Ohio. Warren is the recipient of the 2014 Baum Award for An Emerging American Photographer and is the subject of a 2008 monograph published by Aperture. Upcoming performances include Whoop Dee Doo at Abrons Arts Center in March and the Museum of Arts and Design in April of 2015. Warren was recently selected as a featured artist in ART21's documentary series "New York Close Up" with her first film to premiere in the summer of 2015.
