fotografia festival Internazioanle di Roma Zone Attive Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, 47 00185 Rome Italie

Curated by Enrico Sturani Collaboration: V.M. 21 artecontemporanea Roma The 'glossy' postcards so popular during the Fifties and early Sixties - when they were replaced by coloured ones in offset - bear the caption "real photograph". These were the last postcards made with printed photographs. In an Italy still far from a revival of tourism, they could afford to portray man y decentralised, suburban and minor areas. These postcards that today seem to us as portraying locations without quality, with no artistic value, were at the time welcomed proudly by those who for the very first time, saw their own streets photographed, and drew an arrow to indicated a balcony with a mangy Christmas tree and a broom cupboard, proudly adding: "My house". These were then sent to friends and relatives, all invited to see the new home. These are also unique documents thanks to the photographic quality anticipating the minimalism of the greatest contemporary artists, sensitive to the urban identity, such as Basilico in these images created especially for this Festival. Within a decade, these postcards ended up by inspiring precisely those artists most sensitive to the charm of what is ordinary, such as Peter Blake, Richard Hamilton, Andy Warhol and John Baeder. Then came photographers inspired explicitly by the postcards (such as Martin Parr) or the minimalist anti-romantic aesthetics of these and other artists, returning to confront urban realities with their large cameras placed on trestles, loaded with a flat film, just like the professionals of glossy postcards with the exception of one detail: they did not sign them.
