Galerie Pavlova, Berlins first contemporary photography gallery dedicated to promoting the work of Australian & New Zealand photographers, celebrates its opening with the work of Melbourne based photographer Polixeni Papapetrou and her series Between Worlds.
Polixeni’s somewhat surreal photographic work is immediately inviting through its bold colours and the size of the prints. After this initial meeting the viewer may begin to see the imagery is more complex than first perceived, playing with notions of childhood fantasy and adult consciousness.
With Between Worlds, Polixeni portrays her children with costumes and animal masks against the Australian and European landscape. These environments which are reminiscent of childhood fairy tales, show the characters in an undefined place – between childhood and adulthood – neither human nor animal – between an old world and new.
