Expositions du 8/3/2014 au 3/5/2014 Terminé

Shoshana Wayne Gallery Bergamot Station, 2525 Michigan Ave, B-1 CA90404 Santa Monica États-Unis

Shoshana Wayne Gallery is pleased to present Irit Batsry’s Altered Sites. This is the artist’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery. Altered Sites is a partial survey of Batsry’s photographic work from the last two decades illuminating key themes for the artist: the fragmentation of space, the construction of virtual space, and the dissolution of borders between photography, painting, sculpture, and the moving image.

Images from Batsry’s Neither There Nor Here series are large-scale video prints in which the artist composes ‘photographic scenes’ selected from video material she shot in Southern India.

The works from Batrsy’s Through the Looking series are reflections on sky and ground, architecture, scale, and the absence or presence of human form. Included are images photographed in Icó and Milagres, two small towns in the interior of Northwest Brazil. In Icó, complex images representing colonial architecture are captured in a fraction of a second through the artist’s gesture and become ‘performative collages.’ In Milagres, space disappears and liquefies between the overwhelming presence of sky and ground revealing the artist’s capacity to capture and transform reality into artifice, the concrete into the abstract, and make the viewer question their own sense of perception and visual acuity.

In the Caution series, Batsry photographs ephemeral sculptures she built with industrial security caution tape. The resulting images depict virtual spaces and alter our perception of the actual place where these images were shot on the island of Itaparica in Brazil.

Irit Batsry was born in Israel in 1957. She lives and works in New York and elsewhere. She was awarded the prestigious Whitney Biennial Bucksbaum Award (2002), the Grand Prix Video de Création of the Société Civile des Auteurs Multimedia, Paris (1996 and 2001), and the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (1992). Her work has been shown extensively in 35 different countries. Selected exhibitions include, the National Gallery in Washington, DC, the National Film Theater and the ICA in London, the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, the Museu D’Arte Moderna in Rio de Janiero, and the Jeu de Paume in Paris. Batsry’s work is included in many private and public collections including, the Israel Museum, the Museum of Modern Art
in New York, and The Whitney Museum in New York.
