Artist Susanne Wellm’s series Inner Landscapes is a poetic meditation upon the quiet stories of everyday interiors. Wellm constructs these images using a wide range of photographic techniques and appropriated imagery, including Polaroids and snapshots from photo albums, many of which she has re-photographed or digitally scanned and enhanced with computer or hand drawings. The resulting prints emphasize the beauty of seemingly mundane objects, as well as the intricate textures and soft lighting in each of the scenes that Wellm photographs. Often, human presence is strikingly felt by its absence, as if someone had just left the room before the shutter clicked.
“The primary objective of my work has always been to capture experiences that are sensory; the small things I see and touch that give structure to my everyday life, things that strike a mood… In this series of photographs I seek to convey the feeling, ambiance, or potential stories that I see in the objects, happenings, and people around me.”
Susanne Wellm (b. 1965) lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark, where she has exhibited solo shows at Danske Grafikeres Hus, The National Museum of Photography, Galleri Ellen Friling, and Galleri Tom Christoffersen. Inner Landscapes was also featured this year in the International Discoveries exhibition at FotoFest in Houston, Texas. Wellm’s work is housed in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts in Japan; Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center in Austin, Texas; and Museet for Fotokunst, Brandts Klædefabrik and Vejle Kunstmuseeum in Denmark. This is Wellm’s second solo exhibition at Blue Sky.
