The doyen of British photographers, Mark Gerson, who celebrates his 92nd birthday this year, will present a selection of his photographs of famous writers at Bonhams, 101 New Bond Street on 8 April at 11.00. (please use the Blenheim Street entrance).
These are being sold as part of the Roy Davids Collection Part III: Poetry: Poetical Manuscripts and Portraits of Poets on 10 April and 8 May.

Mark will be joined by leading portrait painter, Peter Edwards, whose work also features in the sale. Many of Mark and Peter’s portraits hang in the National Portrait Gallery. Both Mark and Peter will be available to pose with their work and to answer questions.
Over a long career, Mark Gerson has photographed the leading British poets of the 20th century. He took one of the most famous of all literary photographs – of W. H. Auden, T. S. Eliot, Ted Hughes, Stephen Spender and Louis MacNeice at a Faber party in 1961.

This was the only time these titans of literature were photographed as a group. A copy of the photograph is in the sale (£3,000-3,500).
Other examples of Gerson’s work included in the sale are portraits of W. H. Auden (£500-600), Auden with Stephen Spender (£500-600), John Betjeman (£500-600), Philip Larkin (£1,200-1,800) and Larkin with Ted Hughes (£1,500-2,000), Cecil Day Lewis (£350-450), Andrew Motion (£350-450), Seamus Heaney (£600-800) and Edith Sitwell (£600-800).

Peter Edwards is represented by a striking oil painting of Ted Hughes (£6,000-8,000) described as the finest painted image of the poet and chosen as the cover of the Part I sale catalogue.
Other Edwards portraits in the sale include, Seamus Heaney, (£6,000-8,000) and Carol Ann Duffy (£3,000-4,000).
