Can fiction beat reality ?
In the era of globalization and unprecedented dominance of visual information, we witness both increasing complexity and a continuous interweaving between our world in its physically perceptible, close-up form and remote, digitally generated wolds.
Digital technologies, globalzation basez on economic developments, and radical political changes accelerate the rythm of our lives and have a profound influence on human lifestyles, mobility and transnational power relations. The distURBANces project was initiated by the seven partner cities of the European Month of Photography - Berlin, Bratuslava, Budapest, Ljubljana, Luxembourg, Paris and Vienna - to offer new artistic perspective on urban, technological and political developments. The photos, videos and installations on display focus on current trends and developments, analyzing them and giving them tangible shape.
The exhibition concentrates on several subjects, ranging from an analysis of real life in its socio-political context and the "disturbande" of nature by humans, to utopian and distopian fantasies as well as the extrames of Second Life and ways to "escape" into artificial model worlds.
