Gallery IDA ILLUSTER presents in the exhibition VERSATZSTÜCKE photographic works by JOHN SCHUETZ. The American-born artist, who has lived in Germany for forty years, works in the medium of Lichtbildmontage, which takes its cues from the photomontage of the 1920’s. The artist cuts and mounts his artwork from his own photographs, as well as lab-lit slides. At the exhibition works from the series Leash Your Dog (2001-2011), Burmashot (2004), and Bentwood (1996) will be on display.
John Schuetz consistently rejects the parameters of photography. The photographic film serves him less as an image of external reality, and more as a deconstruction of it through the cutting of slides. Nothing congruent, following the rules of the central perspective whole is seen, but rather single broken pieces modulated more by shadow than light, or comprised of monochrome-colored film surfaces. Their intersection is accentuated by rhythmically placed red mounting tape. John Schuetz uses the photographic film as a palette, composing self-contained visual solutions.

John Schuetz was born in Hartford, Connecticut, USA in 1944. From 1964 to 1966, and 1971 to 1976, he studied art history, theatre studies, liberal arts, and sculpture at the Windham College in Putney, Vermont and the Manchester Community College in Connecticut, as well as the Schiller College in Berlin and Strasbourg. In 1971, he moved to Berlin and began to work in the medium of photography. Since the 1970's, John Schuetz' works have been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows, for example the Maerz Exhibition “BauHaus” in 1988 in Cologne, or the show “The XX. Century - a Century of Art in Germany” in the Neue Nationalgalerie and Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin. The artist has received multiple stipends and taken part in numerous residency programs. His works can be found in the collections of the Berlinische Galerie, the Neue Berliner Kunstverein, and the Willy-Brandt-Haus, Berlin, among others. John Schuetz lives and works in Berlin.
