Alberto Caeiro was the master and the least erudite of pessoa’s Heteronyms. He was the concrete warning against the masks of Knowing, the wise keeper of sheep of pristine thought. That is why he is the favourite poet, within the universe of pessoa, for lovers of nature and champions of a return to a hypothetical “natural world”. but caeiro is also something else, simpler and more complex: a writer who is not afraid of words and who lives life directly, without ceremony. He looks and sees, not worrying about the distance between his seeing and his writing, and doing nothing to diminish it. The photographic images of Sandra Rocha capture that essential tranquillity of Caeiro, along with his gift for contemplating the beauty in things without feeling threatened or at all intimidated by them.
Caeiro is the poet of common sense, that fundamental quality of human intelligence which the miraculous velocity of the arts and engineering so often effaces. It is perhaps this trait, more than any other, that makes him unique: the boldness to proffer thoughts about everything that exists, without awe and without preconceptions. Sandra Rocha’s photographs illuminate that search for an attentive, inaugural justice; they are informed by the courage of detail and the clarity of freedom. they make us breathe the outside air, life, death, the vast expanses, the limits and the eternal provocation of beauty, calling on us to see our illusory knowledge and feelings for what they are. They lead us to the good sense of happiness.
