The exhibition, curated by the art critic Stefano Pirovano, dissects the concept of "Nonplaces" borrowed from the study with the same title by the French anthropologist Marc Augé.
Nencini's photographic study is born of a journey that winds through the western metropolises, to document Nonplaces as spaces of anonymity where individuals who are similar, yet alone, live.
Nonplaces are all those overlaps of the passage through past and present that rule our lives. Overlaps that the photographer's watchful eye uses to tell of the conflicts of everyday life.
Augé states that there are spaces in which an individual happens to be a viewer even though the nature of the show doesn't really interest him. In Nencini's pictures, the viewer becomes in fact the essence of the show.
The subjects of his photographs are depicted in moments of passage through some well-known and other unobserved places: railway and subway stations, skeletons of abandoned factories and city views where anonymous skyscrapers represent the scenario in which contemporary solitude is found.
On the occasion of the opening, the author will also present and sign copies of his book "I Non Luoghi" (The Non Places) published by Silvana Editoriale. The volume, introduced by a critical note by the curator Stefano Pirovano consists of 96 pages with 40 duotone photographs, italian and english text.
The exhibition, displaying 52 framed gelatin silver prints from 24x36 mm. black and white negative film, is willing to travel in 2006.
