Considered as one of the most significant voices of the Sixties and ranking high amongstleading international portraitists, Lewis Morley (b. 1925) is best known for his famed portraits that have subsequently become visual icons of the Sixties and ‘Swinging' London.To celebrate the 80th birthday of this renowned British portraitist, Lewis Morley, the Print Sales Gallery at The Photographers' Gallery will be exhibiting vintage work shot in Londonduring this time.
Lewis Morley was born in Hong Kong in 1925 and moved to Great Britain in 1945.Having set-up his studios at Peter Cook's comedy and jazz club, The Establishment in 1961 Morleyworked in London throughout the Sixties, photographing cultural figures, popular movements and small scenes of life. He is credited with being one of the most successfulphotographers of his time managing to capture the look and feel of the times.These images range from the infamous image of Christine Keeler astride the Arne Jacobson chair,Dudley Moore, Cecil Beaton, Judy Dench and Twiggy to Peter O'Toole. David Bailey and Catherine Devenue.Morley is know for having chronicled the new idols of the Sixtiessociety in a photographic style that ‘captured the buoyant spirit of the times'.
During his 40-year career Morley has worked with equal ease in theatre, fashion, portraiture, and magazine photography – aside from his portraits he is greatly admired for his significant and substantial contributions to fashion and documentary photography. Since 1971 Morleyhas been living in Australia whilst continuing his international career. This exhibition will celebrate Morley's 80th birthday and will highlight a wider and interesting insight into thephotography world during the sixties – a period of great change across the visual arts a well as how this has influenced practice today. Morley's images provide the unique first handreminiscence into this period often seen as a highlight in the social history of the UK.
