The exhibition is inaugurated at 6.30 pm in the presence of Marie Andersson.
Antichambre is the first major exhibition to present the artist Marie Andersson. It contains more than thirty works from 2003 to 2011, which all together reflect her multifaceted art.
A central theme in Marie Andersson’s work is photography’s relationship to the transitory nature of time and memory. Her fascination for the camera’s mechanisms combines with her interest for architecture and places that are both private and public at the same time. The title of the exhibition, Antichambre, derives from the French word for a waiting room, which in a poetical way encapsulates much that preoccupies Marie Andersson and the formulation of her imagery.
The piece Sal 4, plan 5 has been made especially for this exhibition at the Hasselblad Center. It revolves around a 17th century Dutch peephole cabinet, which in many ways shares the fundamental mechanics of a camera. The projection uses two Kodak carousels that will stay lit for the entire period of the exhibition and gradually fade. By late October, the pictures will be irretrievably gone.
Marie Andersson’s objective ways of working and seemingly impersonal registration of her surroundings paradoxically create dreamlike images. The composition and subject matter of Antichambrera (2011) are reminiscent of images from a surveillance camera in a montage of randomly compiled interiors. The flow of mirrors, glass and reflections almost makes the subject matter dissolve. What remains are fragments that together create new places.
The desire to dissolve both time and space gives the images a dizzying depth. Marie Andersson tests and enlarges the limits of the photographic medium and forms of expression. The photographs often refer to themselves and the photographic process. For example, the shadow of the camera she uses is allowed to stay in the picture and reveals that what we see is something more than first meets the eye. With simple and playful means, Marie Andersson punctures the illusion that the photographic image creates in such a treacherous manner.
