With the solo exhibition "Inside Out", the HENRIKE . HÖHN . GALERIE presents Susanne Wollowski's most recent group of unconventional photographic self-portraits. Susanne Wollowski (born 1974) studied at the HBK Braunschweig and completed her art studies in 2003 as a master student of Prof. HG Prager.
Using rumen, an organic material stemming from the stomach of calves and lambs, she creates costume-like objects including bonnets, dresses, and gloves. Dressed in this material, the artist poses as a "living sculpture" in front of the camera, staging herself for the final product, the photograph. She creates untitled portraits in this way, in which she portrays herself in a wide variety of contexts.
Susanne Wollowski's complex conception encompasses art historical references to the history of portrait painting during the Italian Renaissance and the "Golden Age" of Dutch art as well as "timeless" works containing no definite references. The historical framework provided by the well-known portraits of these eras is utilized symbolically and suggestively to create an immediate and introspective atmosphere as well as to form a personal bond between the subject and the observer.
Two aspects play a central role in all of her works: The artist's own "self" and the investigation of rumen as a material. Stylized gestures and poses are paired with this dead, quickly decaying organic material. Rumen, which is usually at the center of the human body, symbolizes the existential, the animal, and the organic. This inner skin of the stomach serves as the continuation of her own body and becomes a kind of external skin, a covering that protects the body.
"Inside Out" is thus programmatic for Susanne Wollowski's work in many ways. She always acts her own model because she is especially interested in presenting personal moods and feelings as well as positioning herself in certain situations. Especially in her multipart works, in which the artist appears both an observer and the observed, her personal "internal space" is reflected in varied ways. Facial expressions and poses as well as her position in the room are essential elements in
mirroring various aspects of a character and bringing them in relation to each other.
