In this era of digital manipulation, Gaston Bertin creates his photographic images with a camera--not a computer. Bertin constructs handmade paper collages, photographs them in a dreamy soft focus and subjects them to rigorous darkroom alchemy to produce intensely saturated images that seem both retro and futuristic. He is "searching for things that do not exist. My pictures are sensations I perceive but cannot describe. I translate them through the emotional strength of color. I intend to say nothing. I know it is impossible."
Gaston Bertin was born in France, raised in Spain, and educated in the United States (BFA, Photography, Parsons School of Design, NY; Masters in Landscape Architecture, Rhode Island School of Design), and Italy (Associate Degree in Industrial Design, Istituto Europeo di Design, Milan). He presently lives and works in Barcelona and exhibits internationally; his work is currently on view in a solo exhibition at Galerie Numaga, Colombier-Neuchâtel, Switzerland.
