In Weilau, Uila in Romanian, there is a village in mountainous Transylvania, Romania, founded in 12. century by Saxons. The Saxons no longer live there, they left gradually in the past century. The only ones who have stayed in the village are the gypsies, who have settled there since around 1800. Although the German term "Zigeuner" has developed a profoundly negative connotation in the past, that's how they define themselves. They live in the village permanently and speak German. The Norwegian photographer Espen Eichhöfer, living in Berlin, visited the village in 2006 and documented the characteristics of this little rural community.
