Vattenfall is very happy to present the work of the photographer Sabine Wenzel as part of their exhibition series "Augenweiden - Positionen zeitgenössischer Kunst".
The work shown is a collection including the first work in her new series, "To Wave" 2010,
as well work from an established series that has been shown previously in other exhibitions as a part of the series "The German Forest" 2006-2010.
In neither series is Sabine Wenzel's approach to her subject that of the classical documentary photographer. She succeeds in transcending the mere representation of her subject matter and has gone on to develop her own unique pictorial language.
Inspired by Japanese ink paintings, the aesthetics of which are heavily dependant on the negative spaces within the composition, Wenzel's compositions in her series "To Wave" have similar clarity.
They are momentary shots depicting feathery white movements on a lighter background.
Red beaks and a sense of swaying white forms can be perceived moving in an undefined space. Angel-like figures appear to be celebrating their existence. However behind the grace and beauty there is a hint of something less than angelic. What could have has caused this excitement, this wild chaos? The photographer does not provide us with any answers.
The series "The German Forest" has similar undertones.
As Professor Klaus Honnef described:
"The bright light lends the forest an almost surreal splendour...The camera comes close
to apparitions, letting the light form the images itself, which itself seems almost tangible.
The photographer uses surface all-over-principle in preference to established principles of composition. The viewer is pulled in, drawn towards an event composed of colour, form and line. The longer the viewers attention is held, the more the images lose their photographic character, the image becomes the reproduction of original and the reproduction becomes a natural part of the physical perception."
Sabine Wenzel was born in 1966 in Thüringen and studied photography at the HGB in Leipzig under Professor Arno Fischer and at the Hochschule für Kunst und Design, Burg Giebichenstein in Halle. She has been working regularly for international magazines, industry and the advertising industry for the last 15 years. Her work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions.
