Studio Equis presents Eikoh Hosoe: Theatre of Memory, an exhibition inspired by Hosoe's notion that Butoh is a modern form of ukiyo-e. The exhibition will be showing at the Japanisches Kulturinstitut in Cologne, Germany from 20 March to 22 May 2010.
This exhibition brings together photographs of the two giants of Butoh dance, Tatsumi Hijikata in the series Kamaitachi and Kazuo Ohno in the series Butterfly Dream, with Hosoe's recent Ukiyo-e Projections series. Theatre of Memory highlights Hosoe’s ability to manipulate time and place to bring memory to life through the intersection between photography and other artistic disciplines including dance, theatre and painting. Hosoe has begun to produce his work on traditionally made silk screens and scrolls, by printing his images using Japanese washi rice paper. In addition to these scrolls and screens, the exhibition includes a full set of prints of the Kamaitachi series.
A limited edition catalogue will be published to accompany the exhibition.
