Brancolini Grimaldi is pleased to announce Laura Letisnksy's second solo show in Italy. The exhibition combines three very recent bodies of work, "To Want For Nothing", "Fall", and "The Dog and the Wolf".
Laura Letinsky photographs an age-old subject: the domestic still life. Fraught with a poignant self-expression, these delicate compositions document or often fabricate, the tabletop traces of human existence. Letinsky's formally calculated constructions, intended for visual and psychological contemplation, are reminiscent of 17th century Dutch and Flemish painting, in which the viewer's attention is drawn to the subtle details which command the still life scenes.
"To Want For Nothing" is a series commissioned by Brancolini Grimaldi this spring. The artist was granted unprecedented access to some of the most prestigious and important Roman homes. From iconic pieces of modern glassware to antique embroidered tablecloths, a fascinating variety of mise-en-scene and atmosphere enrich each photo. The sense of familiarity exuded by these domestic interiors soon fades with Letinsky's personal projects. "The Dog and the Wolf" and "Fall" present a very different expressiveness. Situated in Letinsky's Chicago home and studio, these images depict more abstract compositions, creating an undoubtedly more drastic tone.
"'The Dog and the Wolf', is a phrase for dusk, the hour before the sun sets while there is a transition from light to dark. Literally this is when these photographs are made, but I also allude to the association of this phrase in the sense that this time is one of magic, when what one sees cannot always be explained... the tensions of intimacy and domesticity, the allures, dangers, wants, and needs contained within these spaces and relationships." - Laura Letinsky
