Lee Miller arrived in Normandy twenty days after D-Day as a correspondent for the American army, accredited after being turned down curtly by the British High Command. Over the following nine months she followed the American forces and took part, often against the orders of the military authorities, in some of the most important events of the allied offensive on the continent: the siege of Saint Malo; the liberation of Paris (where she remained for some weeks in search of former friends: Picasso, Colette, Eluard, Aragon and Cocteau); the Luxembourg and Alsace campaigns; the entry into Germany and the last bloody battles on German territory; the taking of Munich where she photographed Hitler's completely abandoned house and his burned down alpine fortress in Berchtesgaden; the liberation of Buchenwald and Dachau. Each year, it has expanded its uniquely diverse showcase of photographic art, ranging from 19th century works to contemporary and innovative photography-based art.
photo l.a. invites galleries, dealers, museums, schools, and non-profit organizations to participate and to define what photography has been, what it is today, and what it might evolve into. Exposition : « Shots of life » de Tony Vaccaro
La Ville de Caen et le Mémorial de Caen proposent à partir du 10 juin, une exposition événement de Tony Vaccaro, photographe de guerre puis photographe des stars. Cette exposition inédite, « Shots of life », proposera 90 photos du photographe américain, aussi couramment surnommé le "GI à l'appareil photo". Les trois périodes qui marquent son travail – guerre, célébrités, portraits – seront ainsi illustrées. Tony Vaccaro retrouve Caen deux ans après sa venue liée aux commémorations du 70e anniversaire du Débarquement et l'exposition « Shots of war » déjà organisée par le Mémorial de Caen.
