An Artificial Wilderness: The Landscape in Contemporary Photography
Man’s impact on the natural landscape takes the form of construction, destruction and intervention in the photographic imagery of An Artificial Wilderness. The title borrows a phrase from the W. H. Auden poem The Shield of Achilles (1952), referring to modern society’s passive stance toward the decline of human values, and its disregard for the physical world. Exemplifying this idea at its most extreme, Edward Burtynsky captures the world’s largest accumulation of discarded rubber tires. Lewis Baltz confronts an uncommon, mundane subject—an urban parking lot—and finds beauty. Rosemary Laing documents a seamlessly laid, floral wall-to-wall carpet in a eucalyptus forest to symbolize the domestication of the natural environment. Manipulating Reality : How images redefine de the world
The exhibition, the idea for which came from a CCCS project that availed itself of the scientific advice of Brett Rogers (director of the Photographers' Gallery, London), Luminita Sabau (director of the DZ Bank collection of contemporary photography in Germany), Martino Marangoni (director of the Fondazione Marangoni, Florence) and Franziska Nori (project director with the CCCS), will be focusing on the meaning of the term "reality" in contemporary artistic research, as it explores different ways of visually representing the world in the ambiguity that lies between the real and the verisimilar, the concrete and the apparent, the present and the past.

ROSEMARY LAING "weather"
"weather" in the new series of large scale colour photographs by the Australian artist Rosemary Laing is an analogy which links the effects of climate, and climate change, on landscape and human being with the effects of political and social 'climates'.
On a formal level the series "weather" is a synthesis of the elements that have formed Laing's artistic practice, bringing together the performative, documentary and object intervention strands.
