Rob Hornstra, born in 1975 in the Netherlands, is a documentary photographer. Since he graduated, he has worked predominantly on long-term projects, both at home and on across the world. He has published seven books of solo work: Sochi Singers, Safety First, Empty Land Promised Land Forbidden Land, On the Other Side of the Mountains, 101 Billionaires, Roots of the Rúntur, and Communism & Cowgirls. Hornstra has produced documentary series for a variety of international magazines, and has also taken part in numerous exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad, in addition to his own work as a documentary maker. In 2009, together with the writer and filmmaker Arnold van Bruggen, he started the Sochi Project, which over five years would document the area of the Sochi resort on the Black Sea. He is also the founder and former artistic director of FOTODOK – Space for Documentary Photography. Hornstra is represented by Flatland Gallery and INSTITUTE.
