Rob Hornstra, born in 1975 in the Netherlands, is a documentary photographer. Since he graduated, he has worked predominantly on long-term projects, both at home and on across the world. He has published seven books of solo work: Sochi Singers, Safety First, Empty Land Promised Land Forbidden Land, On the Other Side of the Mountains, 101 Billionaires, Roots of the Rúntur, and Communism & Cowgirls. Hornstra has produced documentary series for a variety of international magazines, and has also taken part in numerous exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad, in addition to his own work as a documentary maker. In 2009, together with the writer and filmmaker Arnold van Bruggen, he started the Sochi Project, which over five years would document the area of the Sochi resort on the Black Sea. He is also the founder and former artistic director of FOTODOK – Space for Documentary Photography. Hornstra is represented by Flatland Gallery and INSTITUTE.
2012 et déjà la quatrième édition de la biennale "Photographie et Architecture" de la Faculté d'Architecture La Cambre/ Horta de l'Université libre de Bruxelles. 19 exposants ainsi que des pièces extraites de la collection du Musée de la Photographie de Charleroi questionnent le thème du quotidien. Le thème des "espaces du quotidien" choisi pour cette quatrième édition donne à ce dernier toute l'importance qui lui revient. Il convient évidemment ici de dépasser la simplicité apparente qu'on lui concède trop naturellement. Cette simplicité est en effet toute relative et cache en fait un spectre très large et très complexe de réalité...
In the wake of an eventful Netherlands-Russia year, from 14 December 2013 Huis Marseille will be devoting several of its exhibition galleries to a photographic examination of the intrinsically Russian soul. This soul is to be found, for instance, along the banks of the great Russian rivers – such as the Volga, the Neva and the Oka – where the country’s development was closely linked to trade and fishing. The Russian photographer Oleg Klimov depicts Russia’s relationship with water, travelling to these places by sea and waterway. Commencée dans les années 80, la collection de la MEP rassemble aujourd'hui près de 20 000 oeuvres. Collection d'auteurs, représentative de la création internationale de 1950 à aujourd'hui, elle recouvre l'ensemble des pratiques photographiques, et s'est ouverte récemment à l'art vidéo.
Structurée autour de grands ensembles historiques, cette collection s'est constamment enrichie, au fil des années, à l'occasion des expositions organisées à la MEP, ou encore par achats, dépôts ou donations.
