Exhibition: 19th Century Architectural Views From the Collection of Jay McDonald
New York – Nineteenth-century photographs from the collection of Jay McDonald will be on view at Hans P. Kraus Jr. Fine Photographs in the first part of a two-part exhibition from June 30 through July 31, 2015. The exhibition presents architectural views by some of the early masters including Édouard Baldus, Charles Marville, Charles Nègre, Roger Fenton, Gustave Le Gray, and Captain Linnaeus Tripe, among others. The majority of the work on view was made during the 1850s. Part II of the exhibition focusing on early landscape photography from the MacDonald collection will be exhibited at the gallery September 14 through November 20.

Captain Linnaeus Tripe: Photographer of India and Burma, 1852–1860
Captain Linnaeus Tripe (1822–1902) occupies a special place in the history of 19th-century photography for the outstanding body of work he produced in India and Burma (now the republic of Myanmar) between 1854 and 1860. Although he learned photography in Great Britain from amateurs who considered it a pastime, he recognized that it could be an effective tool for conveying information about unknown cultures and regions. With few models to follow, Tripe developed a professional practice under the auspices of the large bureaucracy of the British East India Company. Hans P. Kraus Jr. Fine Photographs presents "Views of Burma" of Linnaeus Tripe
New York – An exhibition of the earliest photographs of Upper Burma, by Linnaeus Tripe, will be on view at Hans P. Kraus Jr. Fine Photographs from February 11 to April 12, 2013. Linnaeus Tripe: Views of Burma will present more than 20 salt prints from waxed paper negatives made in 1855. This will be the first time the photographs have been on view in the United States. Highlights in the exhibition include memorable images of pagodas and temples, landscapes, and monumental sculptures of Buddhas and dragons.
