Livre here/home - Larry Sultan Larry Sultan: Here and Home is the first retrospective of California photographer Larry Sultan (1946–2009). Includes more than 200 photographs ranging from Sultan's conceptual and collaborative works of the 1970s to his solo works in the decades following. Sultan never stopped challenging the conventions of photographic documentation, exploring themes of family, home, and façade throughout his career. Five major bodies of work are represented including: Evidence (1977), made collaboratively with Mike Mandel; Swimmers (1978–81); Pictures from Home (1982–92); The Valley (1998–2003); and Homeland (2006–2009). The show is augmented by a "study hall," with documentation and ephemera providing a glimpse of Sultan’s modes of inquiry as an artist and a teacher.

An extensive selection of his work is now being shown simultaneously in two European museums. S.M.A.K. is presenting the first solo exhibition of Sultan's work in Belgium, and Kunstmuseum Bonn is exhibiting the largest selection of his work ever shown in Germany.
Sultan created "Evidence" (1975–77) together with Mike Mandel, selecting images that previously existed solely within the boundaries of the industrial, scientific, governmental and other institutional sources from which they were mined. Isolated from the context of its origin and presented without explanatory captions their content is mirrored back to the observer. By questioning the position of the photographer as "author," this proje...Exposition Larry Sultan, Mike Mandel We Make You Us: Billboards and Evidence
Stephen Wirtz Gallery presents We Make You Us, an exhibition of Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel’s groundbreaking collaborative works. Deeply influenced by West Coast conceptualism, Sultan and Mandel together created open-ended works that delved into appropriation and public art. The exhibition features examples from their acclaimed and influential 1977 project Evidence, as well as photographic works that document the duo’s series of temporary billboards installed in public spaces in the 1970s and 1980s.
Published in 1977, Evidence was first presented as a book of found photographic images that previously existed solely within the boundaries of the industrial, scientific, governmental and other institutional sources from which they were mined. Organized without explanation or description, it was...Exposition Art and America around 1970 - Hyper Real
Hyper Real – Art and America around 1970, the largest exhibition project to date in the 20-year history of the Ludwig Forum, forms a visual memorial to the American way of life. The exhibition combines 250 works from 100 artists, never before seen together and in this abundance in Germany. Dr. Brigitte Franzen and Anna Sophia Schultz have located photorealism around 1970, temporally, aesthetically, and socially, in the context of parallel artistic currents, such as Pop art, conceptual art, land art and the work of the “New Topographics.” Events such as the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement and the Oil Crisis formed the historical context of the artistic debates in this period.
Almost concurrently with the photorealist artists, photographers also began to address the excessive visual worlds o...Exposition Larry Sultan/Mike Mandel - Evidence In 1977 Larry Sultan (1946-2009) and Mike Mandel (*1950) combed through thousands of photographs in the archives of the Bechtel Corporation, the Beverly Hills Police Department, the Jet Propulsion Laboratories, the U.S. Departments of the Interior and a few dozen other companies, administrations and educational institutions. They were looking for photographs taken specifically for maximum objectivity. They ended up selecting a series of photographs which they printed with great care in a limited edition, as if they were art prints, with the simple title Evidence on the cover. The idea behind the project was clear: they wanted to show purely documentary photographs, originally taken only in order to provide evidence, and then, through selection and presentation, disorient viewers of the book, making them quest...Exposition NUDES Positions of Nude Art Photography
A group exhibition mainly curated from its own collection, displaying more than 40 photographers and their perspectives on mostly female nude art. Selected classics are supplemented with, in some cases, never before exhibited contemporary works of Blaise Reutersward, Nadav Kander, or Ralph Mecke.
The kaleidoscopic exhibition stretches from classical, nearly sculptural studio-stagings, as in the works of Horst P. Horst, Frantisek Drtikol, or Rudolf Koppitz, to the erotic and provocative images of Helmut Newton or Bettina Rheims, and extending to the series of documentary pictures by recently-deceased Larry Sultan, which originated off-set during pornographic shootings.
The studio-photography of the Pictorialists was followed by trend-setting picture experiments in the 1920s.
