5-day Black-and-White Analog Masterclass in Berlin with Jeff Cowen and Jim Casper
5-day Black-and-White Analog Masterclass in Berlin with Jeff Cowen and Jim Casper.
Five photographers will work with nude models in the studio and in nature, and each participant will print his or her own museum-quality silver-gelatin photomural from work performed in this masterclass. This is an intense workshop (marathon might be a better description) for serious photographers who want to master the best of black-and-white film techniques — and experience the magic of making large mural prints from your own negatives in a custom large-format darkroom specifically designed by Jeff Cowen. Lessons and assignments will include: portraiture, the nude (in studio and in nature), still-life, and street photography in Berlin.

Scarab - Jeff Cowen
In this project Cowen uniquely collaborated for 6 months with his model Alexandra Ni, a former ballet and modern dancer of Korean and Russian descent, born in Kazakhstan in 1984. They worked in locations around Europe and the Western (Libyan) Desert in Egypt.
Cowen's photographic process is atypical in conventional photography. One, senses a strong influence of his early years in academic drawing and painting in his images. The artist's approach is not only photographic but painterly, cinematic and sculptural. Cowen uses a lengthy, complex and highly detailed production process to create his photo murals that he has developed and revised for a quarter of a century. His method and physical intervention with chemical attacks, tearing, taping, painterly traces and mark making on a thick wavy paper challenge the tradition... - Exposition
Jeff Cowen at Galeria A34, Barcelona
Extract of text by Urs Albrecht from the exposition catalogue "Jeff Cowen", copyright, Edition Galeria A34, 2008.
I remember my first encounter with Jeff Cowen's photographs. It was autumn 2004, at the Parisian Galerie Seine 51. I was both moved and fascinated by the two children of Puerto Rican descent on the New York ferry, whom I took to be brother and sister. The girl is older than the boy and holds him tightly in her arms. Her gesture is not exactly protective; she seems to be saying, "Look, he's mine". This impression is reinforced by the fact that her left leg also lies across the legs of the boy. The embrace is typical of couples in love. The photograph was taken at a close distance, with a small-format camera and probably a 50 mm lens, in daylight.
In the background we see the head and ... - Exposition

Jeff Cowen Photo Murals
Gallery Bernd Klüser is proud to present for the first time in Germany works by the American artist Jeff Cowen in a solo exhibition titled "photo murals".
Cowens´ photographic process is atypical in conventional photography. The artists approach is not only photographic but painterly, cinematic and sculptural. He uses a lengthy, complex and highly detailed production process to create his sculptural "photo murals". Cowens´ method and physical intervention with chemical attacks, tearing, taping, painterly traces and mark making on a thick wavy paper challenge the tradition of photography generating unique, enduring, and powerfully emotive images.
The starting point is an intensive collaboration with the model, who is actively involved in the photographic session. The final ...
