Exhibition : « Platinium » at Atlas Gallery
Atlas Gallery's press release
A new exhibition at Atlas Gallery will showcase the beauty of the platinum print through the work of diverse international photographers and artists from the early 20th century to the present day.
Platinum-palladium is a traditional printing technique, dating from the 19th century, favoured by photographers and collectors due to the tonal range of the prints. Platinum prints are amongst the most permanent man-made objects – it is thought that a platinum image, properly preserved, can last more than 5000 years.
The painterly quality of the platinum print was embraced by masters of photographer in the early 20th Century such as Edward Steichen and Alfred Stieglitz, who called the process ‘the prince of all media’. This quality, coupled with the tonal depth has le... - Exposition
Le grand Pôle Sud selon Herbert Ponting
ATLAS Gallery is delighted to announce a major exhibition of rare vintage prints by H.G. Ponting, to coincide with the centenary of the death of Captain Robert Falcon Scott and the four members of the Polar Party of the British Antarctic Expedition of 1910 – 1913 who died with him, and to coincide with the National Service of Commemoration at St Paul’s Cathedral to be held on the 29th March, 2012.
The British Antarctic (“Terra Nova”) Expedition remains imprinted in public consciousness as the venture in which Scott was beaten to the South Pole by the Norwegian Roald Amundsen, only to perish on the return journey along with four of his men. Focusing solely on the tragedy, however, is to overlook the great accomplishments of Scott’s expedition. These include the first winter sledging j... - Exposition
- Exposition
Herbert G. Ponting - The Conquest of the South Pole
With the exhibition Herbert G. Ponting: The Conquest of the South Pole the Flo Peters Gallery will present from the latter part of March photographs of historic significance and incomparable suspense.
In 1910 Captain Robert Falcon Scott set sail under the British Flag aboard the research ship Terra Nova aiming to be the first man to conquest the South Pole. Also part of the crew was a photographer and cameraman by the name of Herbert G. Ponting. With his photographs of the expedition and its participants he not only left a unique document about the beginnings of polar exploration but also lets the posterity be part of one of the last great adventures of human discovery.
In 1913 the British expedition of the Terra Nova to the South Pole ended in tragedy. Robert Falcon Scott just missed the glory to be the first man on...
