Hammarskiöld, född 1925, är internationellt verksam som fotograf med utställningar i Sverige och USA. Han är representerad bland annat på Museum of Modern Art i New York, Library of Congress i Washington, Bibliotèque i Paris och Fotografiska museet i Stockholm.
Han har arbetat som mode-, porträtt-, reklam-, arkitektur-, industri- och reportagefotograf. Det svenska landskapet och detaljer ur naturen är teman han återkommer till. Han har arbetat för internationella tidskrifter, utgivit fotografiska böcker och under 20 års tid producerade han bildspel.
1958 var han med och startade gruppen Tio fotografer, som blivit internationellt känd.
Under hösten 1998 var Hammarskiöld aktuell på Wahlström & Widstrand med boken Stockholm De fyra årstiderna, där han fotograferat och Niklas Rådström skrivit texten.
The exhibition Tio Fotografer – The Collective recounts a half-century of creative Swedish photography, and pays tribute to the first organised collective of Swedish photographers. The exhibition presents the works of some of the most important Twentieth century Swedish photographers, and allows the post World War II works to be understood within an international context.
