Son amour de la photographie avait commencé très tôt, treize ans à peine, à Shanghai. Puis à travers les rues de Hong Kong. Dans le secret d'une chambre noire improvisée dans la salle de bain familiale, il apprendra tout seul. Avec un Rolleiflex, en dévorant les livres d'art et de poésie, en filant voir des films et en envoyant ses clichés à tous les concours possibles et imaginables de par le monde.
La série Hong Kong Yesterday reste éblouissante et semble avoir rendu impossible, avec son prolongement The Living Theatre, toute échappée artistique. Son récent travail Fan Ho: A Hong Kong Memoir reviendra de nouveau aux sources, en mêlant des négatifs inédits afin d'obtenir des compositions surréalistes.
Fan Ho a gagné près de 300 prix au fil de sa longue carrière. Il a enseigné, écrit, et réalisé plusieurs films pour le cinéma hongkongais, pas moins d'une vingtaine entre 1963 et 1990. L'année dernière, il avait atteint un record aux enchères Bonhams, à Hong Kong : sa photo Approaching Shadow, prise en 1954, fut vendue au prix de 42 721 euros.

M97 is pleased to present ON THE STAGE OF LIFE, a solo exhibition of vintage silver gelatin prints by Fan Ho, one of the great masters of black and white photography. This is Fan Ho’s second solo exhibition at M97.
The exhibition features a selection of vintage prints developed by the artist close to the time the image was captured, including some award winning photographs like ‘Street Scene’.
