Exhibition : «Daya Mining» from Eric Cahan
Eric Cahan's Data Mining takes its name from marketing research techniques that measure web users' browsing patterns when they view fine art content online. A museum-goer spends an average of thirty seconds in front of an individual work of art, whereas a browser on Instagram or Pinterest spends only eight. Images flow past the eye one after another, throwing into question long-held assumptions about the totemic nature of a work of art. Cahan mirrors this blurring process in his photographs, transforming solarized image of water through a combination of techniques both digital and traditional. The resulting images, luminescent yet opaque, are as seductive as carnival mirrors, yet ultimately reflect only the viewer's gaze. Sky Series - Eric Cahan
Bonni Benrubi is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by Eric Cahan (American, b. 1970). Sky Series is the artist’s first solo show with the gallery. The exhibition opens Wednesday, 30 October and runs through Saturday, 7 December.
Cahan has made the work for his current series during his extensive travels. Taking the sky and ocean as his subjects and points of departure, Cahan makes photographs which are not so much images of landscapes as color-saturated images, equal in parts of flat color and limitless space. “I’ve become very interested in making a whole object,” the artist explains, “and providing a window into a memory of a time or a place.” A new series of paintings based on prints transferred to linen, Masonite or wood panel will also be on show.
