Chuck Close est né en 1940 à Monroe dans l'Etat de Washington ; il vit et travaille à New York City et Long Island. Diplômé de l'Université de Washington (Seattle), il poursuit ses études en art et architecture à l'Université de Yale où il obtient son doctorat en 1964.
Une exposition de ses photographies "Chuck Close" (1989-90) a été organisée par l'Art Institute of Chicago, puis présentée au Ansel Adams Center de San Francisco. Le Metropolitan Museum of Art de New York lui a consacré une exposition de ses œuvres imprimées "Chuck Close Prints: Process and Collaboration" (2004). En 2007, le Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia de Madrid en Espagne lui consacrait une importante rétrospective de ses peintures qui fût présentée par la suite au Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst de Aix-la-Chapelle en Allemagne. Le Musée de l'Hermitage de St Petersbourg présentait Chuck Close: Self Portrait en 2008, puis Close Prints: Process and Collaboration, la même année au Sungkok Art Museum de Séoul en Corée du Sud. Il a participé à de nombreuses expositions de groupe parmi les plus prestigieuses à travers le monde dont la Documenta de Kassel en Allemagne (1972 ,1977), la Biennale de Tokyo (1974), la Biennale de la Corcoran Gallery of Art (1975, 2001), la Biennale du Whitney Museum of American Art (1977, 1979, 1991), la Biennale de Venise (1993, 1995) et Carnegie International (1995-96).
Chuck Close a reçu de nombreux prix honorifiques : en 1992, il a été élu membre de l'Académie Américaine des Arts et des Lettres, a reçu la National Medal of Arts en 2000, a été élu membre de l'American Academy of Arts and Sciences de Cambridge dans le Massachusetts, Etats-Unis.

An extraordinary collection of 830 photographic works spanning from 1844 to 2012, bequested to the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago, forms the basis of an expansive new exhibition, There was a whole collection made: Photography from Lester and Betty Guttman, September 22–December 30, 2016. The exhibition of more than 300 works is curated by Laura Letinsky, Professor in the Department of Visual Arts and the College at the University of Chicago, and herself an acclaimed photographer, and Jessica Moss, Smart Museum Curator of Contemporary Art.
