Bertien Van Manen: Give Me Your Image
From 2002 through 2005, Bertien van Manen traveled all over Europe visiting families and documenting their personal photographs, some selected from albums or hanging on walls, and others stashed in less obvious places around their lives. She collected traces of war and suppression and of happiness and sadness, encompassing a century of history in these recorded--and here re-recorded--meetings of human eyes, minds and hearts. Beyond its very basic appeal, the project seems to reassess van Manenís earlier work--a career of more direct photojournalism including A Hundred Summers, a Hundred Winters, on the people of the former Soviet Union, and East Wind West Wind on the people China--and to memorialize the paper print itself, in light of pervasive new digital cameras and photo-enabled cell phones that make her work all the... - Exposition

For this second anniversary exhibition the British artist and photographer Paul Graham has selected photographers and photographs that are assembled in his investigation of the infinite world of potential images.

With This Infinite World Fotomuseum Winterthur presents in this anniversary year its tenth Set exhibition, which captures the 20-year history of the museum in a very special way. None other than the New York-based photographer Paul Graham was invited to curate this second anniversary exhibition following Concrete – Photography and Architecture. Let's sit down before we go de Bertien van Manen à FOAM
This spring Foam will present the solo exhibition Let's sit down before we go by Bertien van Manen (1942).
More than 60 photos will be on show, created between 1991 and 2009. During that time, Van Manen regularly and extensively travelled with a small 35mm camera through Russia, Moldavia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Tatarstan and Georgia. She stayed for long periods with the people she met on her travels, learned their language and usually became friends with them.
This produced intimate and sometimes tender photos resulting from a personal and sincere relationship. In Bertien van Manen's humanistic approach, photographer and subject are equals and the mutual respect is palpable.
The title of the exhibition, Let's sit down before we go, refers to an old Russian custom : before ... - Exposition

A l’occasion de la sortie du livre Let’s sit down before we go chez MACK , in camera présente une vingtaine de tirages en couleur de Bertien van Manen extraits de cette série.
Bertien van Manen vit à Amsterdam. Elle a commencé sa carrière comme photographe de mode. Inspirée par Les Américains de Robert Frank, elle a voyagé à Budapest et New York puis s’est fait connaître avec son livre A Hundred Summers a Hundred Winters photographies prises en ex-Union Soviétique entre 1990 et 1994. Elle a ensuite travaillé sur des projets comme East Wind West Wind en Chine et Give me your image en Europe qui ont fait l’objet de livres et d’expositions dans de nombreux pays et ont été récompensés par plusieurs prix.
