Exhibition : « The woman who never existed » by Anja Niemi
The Woman Who Never Existed by Anja Niemi was inspired by the words of the pioneering Italian actress Eleonora Duse. Eleonora worked the international theatre stage alongside Sara Bernhardt in the early 20th century. In contrast to Bernhardt's outgoing personality, Duse was introverted and private, rarely giving interviews. She once famously told a pushy New York journalist, that ‘away from the stage I do not exist.’
Niemi takes on the role of a fictional character visualized after reading Eleonora’s words. The Woman Who Never Existed tells the story of an actress who only exists in front of an audience, when no one is looking she starts to disappear.

Exhibition : « Short Stories » by Anja Niemi
In her latest series, SHORT STORIES, Anja Niemi presents 140 sheets of peel-apart Polaroids. For 12 months she worked solely with a 1970s Polaroid Press camera. In an effort to work on something that would be slow to make and time-consuming to look at, she produced around 500 Polaroids, and from them edited down and created eight short stories containing fictional characters, objects, landscapes and interiors - all in some way connected to each other.
This series is significant now that Fujifilm has announced the end of production of the last peel-apart film.

The Little Black Gallery is proud to present Anja Niemi: Starlets
This follows hot on the heels of her critically acclaimed and commercially successful show : « Do Not Disturb » at The Little Black Gallery in 2012.

In Starlets, her latest series of photographs, exhibited for the first time, she continues to combine the self-portrait with the idea of the staged narrative. The images are like film stills or movie posters, with herself cast as the lead character. The stories are loosely told, leaving room for interpretation, and although it is mostly fiction, "there will always be a bit of me in them" she says. Unlike her previous series Do Not Disturb, where she purposely tried to distance herself from her everyday life in Norway, this time she photograp...
