Mário Macilau | Moments of Transition
Every Sunday, most Mozambicans like to mix the new urban and traditional fashion trends dressing up in outstanding customized outfits. Revisiting the past to the period of postindependence, after 1975, we can see the influence of the younger generations that where sent to study in Europe and came back to the country with new concepts of fashion and body. Also, the appearance of enormous quantities of used clothes sent by the United States and Europe, in the informal markets, caught the attention of many people. Now, the Mozambicanʼs taste in fashion is changing and the mixture of urban cloths and accessories with Capulana, the primary item of the African wardrobe, seems to be the perfect solution for a Sunday walk… In this ongoing project MOMENTS OF TRANSITION Mário Macilau focusses on identity and culture and presents a kind of homage, as continuation of / inspiration in Malick Sidibé, Seydou Keïtaʼs work and other African photographers.
Pauliana Valente | Quel Pedra
“Quel Pedra”, Creole name for “That Stone” – a stone to be found in the “Font Flip” neighbourhood in Mindelo. According to the legend, whoever sits on it turns Gay. In this neighbourhood the artist Paulina Valente met Gi, better known as Dery Steven Lima and seven of her friends. With ages between 16 and 22, they are trans people, transgender in the sense that they like to wear dresses and makeup and be called by woman’s names. This project was inspired by the idea of transformation and transgender to represent a community that is generally discriminated, target of exclusion and prejudice. People whose identity and expression is different from what society expects, regarding the gender assigned to them. “Quel Pedra” intends to confront the spectator with his own prejudice, challenging conventions and standards on identity and the human.
