Né en 1954 à Roanoke Rapids, Caroline du Nord est un photographe et réalisateur américain underground vivant à New York.
Son œuvre s'articule autour de de la pornographie et de l'érotisme populaires. Très impliqué dans la scène musicale new-yorkaise du début des années 80 (collaborations avec Sonic Youth, Lydia Lunch et Henry Rollins), il se consacre maintenant entièrement à la photographie. Il est le principal acteur de la naissance du porn-chic avec Helmut Newton et auteur de nombreux ouvrages sur la question.
Richard Kern, photographer and underground filmmaker was born in 1954 in Roanoke Rapids/ NC. He lives and works in New York City. After studying fine arts at the university of North Carolina, his career took off in the 80's when he bought a Super 8 camera and started making extravagant films for an underground audience in New York's East Village art scene. In the 90's he switched to photography full time and occasionally directed music videos for bands like Sonic Youth and Marilyn Manson. Within the last 15 years, Kern has published several books and is a regular contributor to a variety of international magazines.

Coinciding with the release of the VICE Photo Issue 2009, the magazine will present a series of photographic works in a special exhibition.
