Fine Line: Mental Health / Mental Illness by Michael Nye
The Wittliff Collections at Texas State University recently opened Fine Line: Mental Health / Mental Illness by San Antonio photographer Michael Nye, a traveling exhibition of voices and photographs that confronts stereotypes and reveals the courage and fragility of those living with mental illness. Fine Line will be at the Wittliff from January 2 through March 30, 2014.
The public is invited to the exhibition reception and a talk by the artist at 6:30 p.m. on February 11, 2014. The Wittliff Collections are located on the seventh floor of Texas State’s Alkek Library in San Marcos, between Austin and San Antonio. Fine Line: Mental Health/Mental Illness pairs photography with audio recording in a documentary project that reveals the courage and the fragility of people living with disorder, confronts stereotypes, and draws attention to the tenuous threshold between stability and unbalance. Photographer Michael Nye spent four years photographing and recording stories, discovering how, in his words, “Mental illness touches the deepest parts of who we are; our identity, self worth, the inability to communicate, confusion and loss of control. It can happen for no apparent reason and at any time.
