Martin Kippenberger

Born in 1953, Dortmund, Germany.
From 1972 to 1976 he studies for a Fine Art BA degree at the Hamburg College of Art. He moves to Florence. In 1978 he goes to Berlin and becomes the manager of the famous «S.O. 36 hall venue» in 1977, he meets Werner Büttner, Albert and Markus Oehlen. In 1978, with Gisèle Capitain he founds the «le Kippenberger» where he exhibits the works of young artists. In 1980, he moves to Paris. In 1988, he participates in the Venice festival. In 1992, he is a teacher and the college of higher education in Kassel. In 1996, he is awarded the Käthe-Kollwitz-Preis. In 1997, he participates in the Documenta X in Kassel the exhibition of sculptural projects in the cathedrals. Kippenberger wants to open new outlooks by means of ironic installations and images. In 2006 Martin Kippenberger's first retrospective of his work is presented in Great Britain. Many of his productions can be seen at the London Museum, like the Selbstportraits series as well as a number of drawings from his series of hotel writing paper.
