The Venice Biennale - 56th International Art Exhibition
The show consists of over 136 artists from fifty-three countries, and will feature a space for live programming in the Central Pavilion designed by David Adjaye called The Arena. “The linchpin of this program will be the epic live reading of all three volumes of Karl Marx’s Das Kapital,” Enwezor states. “Here, Das Kapital will serve as a kind of Oratorio that will be continuously read live, throughout the exhibition’s seven months’ duration.”
The 56th International Art Exhibition will form a unitary itinerary that starts at the Central Pavilion (Giardini) and continues at the Arsenale, with over 136 artists from 53 countries, of whom 89 will be showing here for the first time.

As part of its curatorial projects, Edouard Malingue Gallery is pleased to present ‘Clamour Can Melt Gold’, a group exhibition that addresses the representation, cultural value and economy around the extraction of gold. It brings together works by Marcel Broodthaers, He Xiangyu, Alfredo Jaar, Regina Jose Galindo, Kwan Sheung Chi & Wong Wai Yin, Sarah Lai, Prabhakar Pachpute, Danh Vo and School of Zanabazar. For the first time in the history of Manifesta, the biennial will not only present an international, industry-leading selection of contemporary art. The exhibition will also consist of an impressive collection of historical works and will display the rich mining heritage in a surprising and innovative way to both local and international audiences.
Curator Cuauhtémoc Medina (Mexico City) developed the concept for Manifesta 9, addressing the social and societal impact of the recent past in Limburg. The exhibition The Deep of the Modern will be presented as a triptych. For the first section, 35 international contemporary artists are invited to create new work, paying heed to regional context, linking the local theme with global issues. Milton Keynes Gallery presents the most comprehensive exhibition in the UK by the renowned Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers (1924–1976) since his Tate Gallery retrospective nearly thirty years ago. Broodthaers was a poet, photographer, film-maker and artist and throughout his career challenged the role of the artwork, the artist and the art institution. This exhibition has been conceived and developed by Milton Keynes Gallery with the support of the Broodthaers Estate. This will be the only venue in the UK for the exhibition, which runs from 26 January – 30 March 2008.
Considered to be one of the most important artists of the last century, the exhibition explores the diversity of Broodthaers’ practice including books, editions, objects, projections and paintings and features several works never see...
