Lebohang Kganye (b. 1990, Katlehong) is an artist living and working in Johannesburg, South Africa. Kganye began her photography studies in 2009 at the Market Photo Workshop and completed the Advanced Photography Programme in 2011 and is currently studying Fine Arts at the University of Johannesburg. Over the five years she has participated in photography masterclasses and group exhibitions locally and internationally. Kganye was the recipient of the Tierney Fellowship Award in 2012, leading to her solo exhibition Ke Lefa Laka at the Market Photo Workshop Gallery. She created an animation from the series which was launched on Mandela Day 2014 in Scotland. Kganye was then selected as the Featured artist for the 17th Business and Arts South Africa Awards in 2014.
Although primarily a photographer, Kganye’s photography often incorporates her interest in sculpture and performance of the archive and memory. She confronts her collected and altered photographs; the artist’s and her family’s, as material for both memory and fantasy. She explores fictional history by using archives to merge illusive characters with “real” characters in a new universe.
Fondées en 1994, les Rencontres de Bamako constituent la seule biennale internationale dédiée à la photographie et à la vidéo africaine. Le Mali, devenu indépendant en 1960, a vu naître une réelle passion pour la photographie studio, dont les maîtres restent encore aujourd'hui Malick Sidibé et Seydou Keïta. Organisée par le Ministère de la Culture, de l’Artisanat et du Tourisme du Mali et l’Institut français, la biennale vise à révéler des talents, comme ce fût le cas pour Pieter Hugo, Zanele Muholi, ou encore Samuel Fosso.

Les Rencontres de Bamako explorent les relations complexes et protéiformes entre les images et le Temps. S’inspirant à la fois de la riche tradition orale du Mali et des bouleversements récents de ce pays, cette nouvelle édition interroge les procédés utilisés par les artistes pour raconter leurs expériences, réelles ou imaginaires, du Temps.
