Deborah Kanfer is originally from South Africa and immigrated to Canada
with her family in 1995. In 2003, she moved back to South Africa to pursue
a degree in photography. During her studies, Kanfer established her passion
for traditional black and white photography. She graduated with a BFA honours
degree in April 2007, ranking first in her year. Deborah Kanfer is currently
pursuing a career as a fine art photographer in Toronto.
Kanfer’s delicate portraits in Pre-Reflection are an extension of her previous collection Memento Mori, in their use of found negatives to capture and preserve memory.In Pre-Reflection Kanfer attempts to contextualize the “pose” and in so doing capture the pre-reflective stance – the body as object prior to the awareness of the body as a thinking or reflective subject.
