Bart Michiels : « The Course of History »
At first glance the large-scale images of Belgian photographer Bart Michiels show wide, almost romantic landscapes and detailed observations of nature. A look at the titles however changes the perception of these images fundamentally and almost instinctively the viewer begins to look for traces of the sad history connected to these places. For his photographic series "The Course of History " Michiels visited the bloodiest battlefields of Europe. The photographs are titled "Verdun", "Omaha Beach" or "Waterloo" and show these places as they are found today, decades, in some cases centuries after the events took place that connect them with our collective memory. Bart Michiels' images are a reflection on the power of words and discuss the meaning of war and it's consequences.

"Imaging History" au FoMu
Capture the past. That was the assignment photographers Bruno Vandermeulen and Danny Veys were given at the archaeological site of Sagalassos in Turkey. How does a photographer approach the past? When photographing the ancient city, Vandermeulen and Veys decided not just to record the archaeological finds, but to question the very objectivity of the lens itself.
This was the starting point for Imaging History. How does one look at something that is no longer there? Do we have enough imagination, or does it vary according to the vision of the photographer? Along with Vandermeulen and Veys, five internationally renowned photographers - Shimon Attie (USA, 1957), Raphaël Dallaporta (FR, 1980) Sally Mann (USA, 1951), Bart Michiels (BE, °1964) and Simon Norfolk (NGA, 1963) - present a series of images and appro... - Exposition
The Course of History: Götterdämmerung - Bart Michiels
In this third and final installment of The Course of History, Michiels explores the Eastern European battlefields of Russia and Germany.
The term "Götterdämmerung" is adapted from Richard Wagner's final opera of The Ring Cycle and is intended to refer here to the notion of a "violent end" or "destruction" as was the case for the Third Reich. Many of the battlefields in Götterdämmerung are sites of the violent precursors of the collapse of this regime.
Michiels started photographing The Course of History in 2001 focusing on the sublime and pastoral landscapes of France. These former blood-soaked sites revealed their history of battle and war through subtle marks and features in the land. The sites in Götterdämmerung are of a darker order; their palett...
