Toronto April 2007 – Now in it's 11th year, the CONTACT TORONTO PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL brings art to Toronto streets, subway platforms, parking lots, cafes and galleries during the month of May. The largest festival of it's kind in the world, CONTACT takes over Toronto for a month of exhibitions, installations, lectures and events.
“During CONTACT can you find the work of world renowned photographers in accessible, public spaces, as well as exciting works by emerging photographers from Toronto and across Canada.” says CONTACT Executive Director Darcy Killeen. “CONTACT gives the public an opportunity to interact with artists, photographers and industry professionals throughout the month of May”.
Accessible to all, the Toronto Photography Festival runs for an entire month and gives people a variety of different ways to experience photography. Here are a few highlights of CONTACT 2007
* The Constructed Image: Photographic Culture brings together 10 artists from nine different countries into one exclusive exhibition exploring the CONTACT 2007 theme: Thomas Demand (German); Dionisio González (Spain); Ilkka Halso (Finland); Simen Johan (Norway); Kim Joon (Korea); Scott McFarland (Canada); Miao Xiaochun (China); Erwin Olaf (The Netherlands); Karen Ostrom (Canada); Sam Taylor-Wood (Great Britain). Presented by Scotiabank, and co-curated by CONTACT and the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art.
· For the fifth year, Public Installations of photography by Canadian and international artists reconstruct city spaces, transit sites and subway platforms as venues for contemplation. 2007 installations by: Erwin Wurm (St Patrick subway station platform), Phillipe Ramette (St Patrick subway station platform), Jonathan de Villiers (Brassaii courtyard), Carlos and Jason Sanchez (MOCCA parking lot, 952 Queen St West), Isabelle Hayeur (Drake Hotel front windows) and Douglas Coupland (Transit Shelters on Queen St West from Shaw to Gladstone Ave)
· 35 CONTACT Feature Exhibitions explore the festival theme at 25 venues throughout Toronto: Allen Lambert Galleria; Alliance Francaise in Toronto, Angell Gallery; Artcore/ Fabrice Marcolini; BCE Place; Birch Libralalto; Clint Roenisch Gallery; Christopher Cutts Gallery; Corkin Gallery; Craig Scott Gallery; Gallery 44; Gallery TPW; Gladstone Hotel; Goethe- Institut Gallery; IndexG; Istituto Italiano di Cultura; Jessica Bradley Art + Projects; MOCCA; Nicholas Metivier Gallery; Monte Clarke Gallery, Olga Korper Gallery; Parts Gallery; Peak Gallery; Stephen Bulger Gallery; Wynick/Tuck Gallery; XEXE Gallery; York Quay Centre
· CONTACT's Films On Photography profiles such innovative and controversial photographers as Robert Mapplethorpe, Tierney Gearon, and Imogen Cunningham. From May 11 through 13, film and photography lovers can enjoy this acclaimed annual series at the National Film Board of Canada in downtown Toronto.
· The Portfolio Review program is designed for photographers looking to break into the industry. Curators, art dealers, directors, publishers and photo editors are assembled for May 2 and 3 to provide one on one reviews for established and emerging photographers in commercial or fine art photography. The Portfolio Review Exhibition, selected by reviews, will showcase the best work seen in all disciplines at the HP Gallery from May 4-22.
· THE HP Lecture Series gives the CONTACT audience an opportunity to meet leaders in the photographic field as they explain their work from technical and creative points of view. 2007 speakers are: Henry Wilhelm, President Wilhelm Imaging Research Inc; and Magnum Photographers Jim Goldberg, Eli Reed and Susan Meiselas.
· CONTACT's Lecture Series includes several artists exhibiting their work at the forefront of the festival: Carlos and Jason Sanchez; Karen Ostrom; Roger Ballen (Kodak Lecture Series); Panel discussion on The Constructed Image: A European Perspective; Liza Nguyen Talks With Dr Robin Roth on Souvenirs of Vietnam.
· Shutterbugs are invited to express themselves and get involved with a series of programs including Shoot Experience photographic scavenger hunt, book signings, master classes and the OneStop call for photo submissions.
· Over 175 Open Exhibitions at galleries, shops, restaurants and public spaces throughout the city. Works from local and international artists are displayed at venues across the GTA, making CONTACT North America's largest photography festival.
This opening week and throughout the month of May, CONTACT invites Toronto to the following events:
