LagosPhoto Foundation is pleased to announce its newest project, “The Year of Photography” in 2015, as the annual festival transforms to create a year-round programme of exhibitions, artist residencies, workshops, and mentorships with leading local and international artists.Lagos Lagos Nigeria
As the festival outgrows its month-long annual presentation to encompass a comprehensive and permanent educational platform, LagosPhoto will present a ten- month initiative starting in January 2015, leading up to the sixth edition of LagosPhoto in October 2015. Programmes will include a series of solo exhibitions highlighting new work of participating local and international artists, a group thematic exhibition that explores the relationship between photography and design, residencies for international artists to produce new photographic work in Lagos, and an intensive public programming initiative including workshops, talks, and extended mentorship for emerging photographers. The “Year of Photography” will also integrate the YECA (Youth Empowerment Through Contemporary Art) programme, which targets youth in public secondary schools in Lagos with courses in visual arts and photography, as participants in the expanded initiatives of LagosPhoto.
LagosPhoto launches “The Year of Photography” with a Kickstarter campaign in support of the projects that will take place in 2015. The LagosPhoto Kickstarter campaign has been selected by Art Basel's independent jury to be a part of the Art Basel Crowdfunding Initiative. This new initiative will present jury-selected art projects to a global community of potential benefactors, including Art Basel’s audience and Kickstarter’s community, who have pledged over one billion dollars to creative projects. The goal is to support non-profit visual arts organizations, at a time when public funding for the arts has been dwindling, by sharing their stories, generating contributions, and reaching out to new audiences.
The LagosPhoto Kickstarter campaign includes multi-tiered levels of rewards for its supporters, from LagosPhoto merchandise to its posters, catalogues, and limited edition photographs. Notable rewards include a special edition print of renowned photographer Cristina de Middel’s newest series This is What Hatred Did, executed in Lagos, in an edition of 100, as well as Aisha Augie-Kuta’s celebrated series Material Culture, produced in Abuja, in an edition of 250.
Launched in 2010, LagosPhoto is the first and only international arts festival of photography in Nigeria. In a month-long annual project, events include exhibitions, workshops, artist presentations, discussions, screenings, and large scale outdoor installations in congested public spaces in Lagos. LagosPhoto aims to provide a platform for the development and education of contemporary photography in Africa by establishing mentorships and cross-cultural collaborations with local and international artists. LagosPhoto presents photography as it is embodied in the exploration of historical and contemporary issues, the promotion of social programmes, and the reclaiming of public spaces.
