Chet Baker : If I Should Lose You

Chet Baker (1929-1988) was an idol during his early career in music. Good-looking, talented, he played trumpet mainly by ear and sang in a soft, attractive style. He won polls, travelled to Europe, made recordings, was in films, played with Charlie Parker, and featured briefly in the remarkable Gerry Mulligan Quartet, unique for its not have a piano in the band. Baker developed a heroin habit in the 1950s, something that would plague him the rest of his life and cause him to spend time in prison. Some of his recordings are brilliant, while others are unfortunate, driven more by need than inspiration. There was a time when damage to his teeth limited Baker's playing; he eventually had dentures made and slowly relearned his playing ability using an altered embouchere. "If I Should Lose You" is from a 1985 album of duets with Canadian pianist Paul Bley, recorded in Copenhagen, called "Diane". Baker was in good form again. In May of 1988, Baker's body was found on Prins Hendrikkade, near Zeedijk, on the street below his second-story room at the Prins Hendrik Hotel in Amsterdam. There were wounds to his head. Drugs were found in his room. There have been many stories about whether he fell, jumped or was pushed, but an autopsy revealed no evidence of a struggle, so his death was ruled an accident. Chet Baker gave us some beautiful music, music that will endure. In the video I have used some wonderful photographs, many by the great William Claxton, who immortalized Chet Baker in ...

Perfect for a triple bill with "Food of the Gods" and "Day of the Animals". Stars Stuart Whitman, Janet Leigh, Rory Calhoun and DeForest Kelley

Stan Levey "The Original Original"

A video preview of a new jazz DVD documentary featuring jazz bop pioneer drummer Stan Levey. Stan Levey takes you on a musical journey from the birth of bebop, through the Big Band jazz era, to the "west coast, cool school" of modern jazz music. Stan Levey, one of the premiere storytellers in Ken Burns' "Jazz" documentary, tells fascinating tales of his days with the famed Parker/Gillespie group on 52nd Street in New York and his being the driving force of the Stan Kenton Orchestra and Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars. The commentaries are told along with music, film clips and photographs of many jazz greats captured by world famous photographers William Claxton and Herman Leonard, and include many never before seen photographs from Stan's own personal collection. Also included are special appearances from Stan's friends and colleagues: Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Charlie Watts, Quincy Jones, Hank Jones, Bill Holman, Lee Konitz, Howard Rumsey, Terry Gibbs, Bill Henderson, Lalo Schifrin, and many more, including some very special observations from Charlie "Bird" Parker himself. For more info about the DVD visit www.stanlevey.com. Produced by Stan Levey and Arthur Shelby Pritz. Directed by Arthur Shelby Pritz.

Sonny Rollins - Way Out West [from 1957 album Way Out West]

Sonny Rollins - Way Out West Year: 1957 Label: Contemporary Tenor Sax: Sonny Rollins Bass: Ray Brown Drums: Shelly Manne The timeless Way out West established Sonny Rollins as jazz's top tenor saxophonist (at least until John Coltrane surpassed him the following year). Joined by bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne, Rollins is heard at one of his peaks on such pieces as "I'm an Old Cowhand (From the Rio Grande)," his own "Way out West," "There Is No Greater Love," and "Come, Gone" (a fast stomp based on "After You've Gone"). The William Claxton photo of Rollins wearing Western gear (and holding his tenor) in the desert is also a classic. [The Contemporary re-release appends three bonus tracks, all of them alternate takes.]
